Here at Harrison Billet we don't believe in in-built obsolesence. We build our calipers to last a lifetime, but components do need to be replaced. As part of the neccessary maintainance that you must do, or have done, at regular intervals for your calipers to give optimum performance and safety, pads, seals and pistons should be checked. We get a lot of complaints that our brake pads don't last long enough. We've listened, and not raised the price for five years. Again this year we won't raise the price. Changing the pads regularly (at a fair price) has benefits other than the obvious one of not chewing into your disc with the steel backing plate of the pad. Firstly, it makes you get down and visually inspect perhaps the most important safety areas of your bike. Not just your caliper, but the mounting bolts, discs, bobbins, axle nuts etc. You'd be surprised at some of the horrors we've seen caused by nothing more than lack of attention. Check for alignment, cracks, leaks, loose nuts and bolts, uneven wear etc. Secondly, the pads are the sacrificial part of converting momentum into stasis. Something gets hot, and something wears down everytime there is friction (which is as you know, the governing principle of braking). Most of the people we've spoken to would prefer that the sacrificial item was a £20-30.00 set of pads, not an expensive disc. We prefer to keep our pads affordable, even cheap by other brake manufacturers standards, and have you feel less unhappy about changing them BEFORE they need it. Since it's been illegal to sell brake pads containing asbstos, we've had a difficult task finding a compound with the right balance of longevity, heat transmission, and performance. Soft pads=fast stops and faster wear. Hard pads=slower wear, but slower braking, and a more aggressively worn disc. We've tried all the makes of that we know of, and at the moment we fit and supply SBS pads. There are others on the market that perform well, and to a large extent your pad wear depends on your load, and how you ride. We'd prefer to hear your complaints about pad wear, than supply you with harder pads that wouldn't be so effective with a heavy load. We'd prefer you still had enough brake on a steep hill, two-up and with a load, that weekend you make a trip. A softer pad increases the likelyhood of that.
