Here at Harrison BILLET we don’t believe in in-built obsolescence.
We build our calipers to last but components do need to be replaced. As part of your regular maintenance pads, seals and pistons should be checked, ensuring your calipers give optimum performance and safety.
We believe changing the pads regularly has benefits other than saving your disc from being chewed by the steel backing plate of the pad.
The first, other, benefit we see means that you get down and visually inspect the most important safety areas of your bike. Not just your caliper, but the mounting bolts, discs, bobbins and axle nuts. You also check for alignment, cracks, leaks, loose nuts and bolts and uneven wear. You’d be surprised at some of the horrors we’ve seen caused by nothing more than lack of attention.
Secondly, the pads are the sacrificial part of converting momentum into stasis. Something gets hot, and something wears down every time there is friction (which is as you know, the governing principle of braking).
Most of the people we’ve spoken to would prefer that the sacrificial item was a set of pads and not an expensive disc.
Since it's been illegal to sell brake pads containing asbstos, we've had a difficult task finding a compound with the right balance of longevity, heat transmission, and performance. Soft pads=fast stops and faster wear. Hard pads=slower wear, but slower braking, and a more aggressively worn disc.
We've tried all the makes at the moment we fit and supply SBS pads. There are others on the market that perform well, and to a large extent your pad wear depends on your load, and how you ride. We'd prefer to hear about pad wear, than supply you with harder pads that wouldn't be so effective with a heavy load.
We prefer you still had enough brake capacity on a steep hill, two-up and with a load, that weekend you make a trip. A softer pad increases the likelihood of that.
